“As we learned from social media posts and related testimonies, an individual has been observed trapping the kittens and placing them in a car,” the movement noted. This alarming report has raised serious questions about the fate of the felines.
Details surrounding the incident emerged after complaints were submitted to the Animal Police. Reports indicate that on Saturday, information about the individual was provided to authorities, who took preliminary actions and reportedly reached out to the person in question.
“However, the claims made appear to be unsubstantiated, as the kittens continue to be missing from their location,” the statement added, heightening the urgency of the situation. Volunteers who had been caring for the kittens expressed their despair, noting that five days have passed without any positive news.
“Today is Wednesday and five days have already passed without any positive development or locating of the person in question. Volunteers are in despair as the cats continue to be missing, causing intense feelings of anger and anxiety about their fate,” the movement’s statement detailed.
Compounding the issue, there have been reports of similar disappearances from other supermarkets in the area. The movement has urged authorities to broaden the investigation to encompass these additional complaints. “We demand the police take all necessary actions to locate the specific person, fully investigate the incident, return the cats to their location, and investigate the reports of cat disappearances from at least two other supermarkets,” the statement implored.
Legislation prohibits the abandonment of animals under human care, which makes this situation all the more critical. The movement called on animal lovers who may have information related to the incident to come forward and inform the police.
Unfortunately, the movement highlighted issues with communication, stating that “yesterday, whilst citizens intended to provide information about the case, the Animal Police did not answer their calls.” They noted broader concerns regarding the operation of the Animal Police across Cyprus, which they plan to address with the new Justice Minister.
